Markdown to Google Docs
Paste Markdown, check the preview, then copy it as formatted text for a Google Doc, or download a .docx with tables, footnotes and Mermaid diagrams to open in Google Docs.
To get Markdown into Google Docs with its formatting, paste the Markdown into the editor above, click Copy for Google Docs and paste into your Doc. The clipboard then holds formatted text (HTML) instead of Markdown, so headings, lists, links and tables paste as formatting rather than as # and **. If the document has Mermaid diagrams or footnotes, click Download DOCX instead and open it in Google Docs with File > Open > Upload.
What can Google Docs do with Markdown by itself?
According to Google's help page, Google Docs can:
- format Markdown as you type, once Tools > Preferences > "Enable Markdown" is ticked (headings, bold, italics, strikethrough, links);
- convert Markdown on the clipboard with right-click > Paste from Markdown;
- copy a selection out as Markdown with right-click > Copy as Markdown;
- download a Doc as Markdown with File > Download > Markdown (.md);
- open an uploaded .md file as a Google Doc.
If those work for your document, you do not need this page. It is useful when you want to see the result before it lands in the Doc, when you are on a device or editor without Paste from Markdown, or when the Markdown has Mermaid diagrams or footnotes.
What does Copy for Google Docs put on the clipboard?
Two versions of the same document: formatted HTML, which Google Docs, Word and email editors use on a normal paste, and the original Markdown as plain text, which code editors and plain-text fields use. Mermaid diagrams and LaTeX math are copied as their source text; use the .docx for diagrams. The same copy pastes into Word, Outlook and Gmail.
How do I get ChatGPT or Claude output into Google Docs?
Use the copy button on the reply, which copies Markdown, paste it here, then use Copy for Google Docs. If the reply has stray citation markers or extra blank lines, run it through the AI output cleaner first.
How are tables, code, front matter and other edge cases handled?
| Input | What you get |
|---|---|
| Headings # to ###### | Copied as HTML headings h1 to h6; in the .docx, Word's Heading 1 to 6 styles |
| GFM tables | Copied as an HTML table; a real table in the .docx |
| Fenced code | Copied as a preformatted block; a monospace block in the .docx |
| Task lists | Checkbox elements in the copy, which some editors drop; ☒ and ☐ in the .docx |
| ```mermaid | Source text in the copy; a picture in the .docx |
| Footnotes | A numbered notes list in the copy; real footnotes in the .docx |
| $...$ math | LaTeX source text in both |
| Images | Linked by URL in the copy; alt text as a link in the .docx |
